Eyelid Rejuvenation

Eyelid Rejuvenation

Overview

The eyes are often thought of as the windows to the soul. Despite feeling young on the inside, many patients complain of a tired appearance due to excess skin, coarse wrinkles, and bulging fat of the lower eyelid along with excess skin and fat of the upper eyelid. The aging process can add years to your appearance often on a face that otherwise seems quite young. Cosmetic eyelid surgery is one of the most common cosmetic procedures in the USA. It can be carried out on an outpatient basis, removing years of the aging process. Dr. Spence performs blepharoplasty (eyelid surgery) in Orlando in his fully accredited surgical suite at his cosmetic surgery practice. Schedule your consultation today at 407-999-2585 with Dr. Kenrick Spence at Orlando Plastic Surgery. Also feel free to browse through our Eyelid Surgery Before & After Photos.

Dr. Spence often combines a  facelift in Orlando with eyelid surgery for complete facial rejuvenation. During your consultation, you'll have the chance to discuss whether this might be a good strategy for you.

Evaluation for Blepharoplasty

  • Overall evaluation of state of health
  • Detailed history of any vision problems
  • Evaluation of pattern of aging:
    • Eyelid decent
    • Excess skin
    • Bulging fat
    • Position of the scar and effects on upper eyelid

Preparation for Blepharoplasty

  • Medical clearance, as needed
  • Stop all blooding thinning agents at least 1 week prior to surgery, including aspirin, vitamin E, etc.
  • Must stop smoking at least 8 weeks prior to surgery

Procedure: cosmetic eyelid surgery is patient specific do actual procedure will depend on your problem to be corrected.

For a patient with bulging fat, good lower eyelid skin tone, and very few wrinkles, a Transconjunctival Blepharoplasty is performed where one incision is made inside the lower eyelid and the protruding fat pads are gently removed. This leaves no scarring on the outside of the lower eyelid.

For a patient with fine wrinkles, no excess skin, and bulging fat, a Transconjunctival Lower Lid Blepharoplasty is performed in combination with a resurfacing procedure to the lower eyelid (e.g. a chemical peel or laser resurfacing). This resurfacing procedure will take approximately 5 to 7 days to heal depending on the extent of the procedure.

For a patient with excess lower eyelid skin, the skin is removed from the eyelid via an incision approximately 2 mm below the lash line. This is easily hidden on almost all skin types.

Excess upper eyelid skin and fat is removed from a line that falls in the natural crease of the upper eyelid. Fat can also be removed through this incision.

Excess upper eyelid skin sometimes requires that a brow lift be performed. The brow contributes to the amount of excess skin present on the upper eyelid as it descends. In many cases removing the upper eyelid skin alone does not produce a more awake look until the brow is raised.

Risks of Cosmetic Eyelid Surgery

  • Ectropin: a condition where the lower eyelid is pulled downwards from scarring
  • Dry eye
  • Poor scarring
  • Bleeding

Dr. Spence will discuss additional risks for your individual case during your consultation.

Recovery after Eyelid Surgery

  • Most patients recover from eyelid surgery in about 10 to 12 days
  • Many patients are able to go out in public within 7 days, resuming normal activity in 2 weeks
  • Limited activity for the first 48 hours is recommended
  • There may be some bruising, which resolves with time

Blepharoplasty can produce significant improvement in your appearance with a more awake, well-rested look; giving you an appearance that is consistent with the way you feel. To schedule an eyelid surgery consultation with Dr. Spence, call 407-999-2585 or request a consultation online.
